Destination in Focus: Sydney
Sydney …where different cultures blend harmoniously in style, opulence and good taste. This is Sydney to most who have been here, and to those who kept on coming back.
Be clothed by international designers like Gucci, Versace and DKNY, or experience local pampering in equally good hands of Dinnigan and Alannah Hill.
Savor sumptuous cuisine along the harbor in one of the gourmet restaurants poised for panoramic view of the Opera House…as we retell its story.
But wait!
You can’t afford to miss the opportunity to see the Opera House up close, can you?
Sydney Opera House has evolved from what its name originally connotes: to set stage for other performances in arts, drama, films, entertainment, dances, and classics like jazz, as well. Of course, the opera still receives audience here.
Patrons, who come for a serving of arts and entertainment in a higher level of taste, also get a helping of good food from any of the four restaurants inside the House. Not to be outdone are cafes and bars. A guided tour is available to make sure you, as well as the others, will make your trip here your first - definitely, not your last.
Sydney Opera House stands as an imposing landmark on a harbor peninsula. So imposing it is that whenever you think of Sydney, you think of the Opera, and vice versa.
But what truly happened to the young man who designed it?
In 1954, a committee was set up by the state premier to assist the government in building an Opera House at Bennelong Point. Two hundred-thirty-three designs poured in from various parts of the world, competing for the honor to design what could be one of the world’s best Opera houses.
Joern Utzon, a young man, with exemplary talents, won.
His design intrigued the minds of the judges. The concept, though brilliant was marred by problems: The stages inside the building would need extensions; and the “sails” that define the whole structure were difficult to construct by the kind of technology at that time.
Yet, it was there on paper, and it was just too magnificent to ignore.
Construction began in 1958. From a forecast of AUD $7 million and 4-year time frame, the whole project ballooned to AUD$100 million and 15 years to build!
Unified on its stand not to divert funds from public services, the state’s government drummed up a controversial, yet highly effective, scheme.
For nothing could have done it as fast as the lottery! Its proceeds went to the Opera House. It ran for decades and finally, the House was built.
What happened to Joern?
Another problem posed itself on the building’s exterior plan. It was thought at first that the enormous sails would be fabricated in scaffolds, surely a bigger expense. Joern got a flash of insight from peeling orange, and that was to build spherical segments from the skeletal framework of the building itself, and prefabricate these in molds, joining them together. It was not sheer luck that built the Opera House but stark genius in a young man’s mind.
It was just unfortunate; he didn’t see his masterpiece to the end. Pressures from the union and the government, made Joern Utzon packed his bags and left Australia for good. That was in 1963. To where, nobody exactly knows.
The exterior and the interior finishing jobs can be attributed to young Australian architects, who, fueled by the same inspiration to create something that will stand time and the passing of generations, finished the Opera House.
Queen Elizabeth II formally opened Sydney’s Opera House in October 1973.
Intrigued by the structure which idea originated from an orange peel?
